Receiving Services
There are several steps that need to be completed before a student can begin to receive EL Services.
- What language did your child FIRST learn to speak? - What language do you MOST OFTEN use when speaking to your child at home? - What language does your child MOST OFTEN speak at home? = What language does your child MOST OFTEN speak outside the home? |
Home Language Survey
When any new student enrolls in school, the student's family is required to complete a Home Language Survey. The Home Language Survey asks four questions: - What language did your child FIRST learn to speak? - What language do you MOST OFTEN use when speaking to your child at home? - What language does your child MOST OFTEN speak at home? - What language does your child MOST OFTEN speak outside the home. If the answer to any of these questions is yes, the English Learners (EL) teacher must administer an assessment to the student. |
Initial Assessment
The EL teacher will measure the student's listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English using the W-APT or MODEL when they first enter a school at WOCSD. The teacher also will observe the student and consult with the student's classroom teacher about his or her language skills. If a child is transferring from another district in Maine, the EL teacher will contact the former school district to confirm whether or not a student was enrolled in an EL program. If a student has scores from either the W-APT or the ACCESS test, then these scores will also be used by WOCSD. |
